I have a older model Sony Vaio desktop. Just recently it started freezing and sounding a audible alarm.?
I have done a fresh install which helped for a little while but it has started up again. I did notice some files were still on the "D" drive from the old installation. Do I still have a virus or do I have hardware failure? The alarm is through the internal speakers and is in a up & down tone. Once it freezes...only way to restart is to hold power button until it resets. Thanks for your suggestions...
It freezes up and sounds the alarm most times but it does just restart on occasion also. It is about 5 years old (Pentium 4 , RX 550 Model)
Open the case.
Check for dust and dirt.
Reseat the RAM.
Go to the motherboard's support site and find out the beep codes.
Does it freeze or does it turn off?
How old is your machine?
What is your video card?
I had a bad video card do this to me one time.
Add some more info if you want.
Added later: Have you ever cleaned it out? Are all your fans working? Did you check your motherboard beep codes? What Operating system are you running? You do run anti-virus program?
If I had to bet on it I would say you have a hardware problem. I had a heat sink fall off the CPU one time and it did the exact same thing. That being said unless you are willing to open the case or take it to somebody to work on you are not going to be able to troubleshoot it. At today's prices it might just be cheaper to get a new machine.
