Calibrating my LCD LG 47" 1080p TV with Digital Video Essentials blu-ray version?
To my knowledge the disc doesn't explain what settings to use on the TV to start your calibration. Do I start on standard, cinema, game, sport, etc? Also should I turn off all the "extra" settings like dynamic contrast, eye care, dynamic color etc before starting the calibration? What color temperature do you start with, warm, cold, medium, etc.? Help please!
First things first, it’s often a good idea to be sure that you have installed the latest firmware update.
Without the specific model number of your LG display I can only give you a limited number of recommended settings to use; you will need to experiment with the remainder to find the proper settings. In addition, within the resources that I’ve provided below you will find links to several online How-To articles as well as detailed test pattern description manuals in Adobe Acrobat format for DVE that should help you get the most from your DVE disc. It’s important to note that you may not like the results after optimizing (and/or professionally calibrating) your display. If you find this to be the case then at the very least the optimum settings will provide a good baseline reference with which to begin the tweaking process; be sure you save your settings.
Note: please ignore those settings that do not specifically apply to your particular display.
Energy Saving: Off

Digital Noise Reduction*: Off
Gamma: Low - Medium
Black Level: Low (always!)
Real Cinema: On
TruMotion 240Hz: Off (or Low; you’ll need to experiment with which setting looks best.)
Color Standard: HD
LED Local Dimming: On
Color Gamut: Standard (or BT709)

Color Management System: (Leave at factory default)
*(Sometimes you may find that the lowest setting may be helpful when watching noisier sources of video.)
Side note: technically speaking true display “calibration” REQUIRES professional measurement equipment to precisely measure the color—i.e., the CIE chromaticity coordinates—of white at several discrete points¹ (which correlate to specific video signal voltage levels) across the entire gray-scale of the display thereby allowing a professional technician to precisely adjust the white point of the display. Without the use of such equipment you are simply optimizing the user-adjustable picture settings to achieve the most accurate (or pleasing) picture fidelity relative to the stock white point and gray-scale for any given picture mode. Nevertheless, the latter is more than sufficient for roughly 90 percent of all non-professional consumers that own or use displays. I have provided several related resources below that you may find helpful.
¹ The standard white point reference target for a video display is CIE D65 (CCT 6504 K) within a CIELUV delta E (dE or ∆E) of 6 or less across multiple gray-scale levels from 20 to 90 IRE and a ∆E of no more than 10 at the gray-scale extremes. (Note: some techs prefer to report ∆u´v´ color difference values in addition to or as an alternative to ∆E.)
