Owners of outdoor or indoor/outdoor cats?
I've never had outdoor cats so I was just curious, is there a way that you monitor your cat's feeding and urinary habits since they aren't inside the house around the clock? Please, please, please no one start criticizing anyone's opinion either.... I'm just asking to hear the other side and if you don't agree with it, that's fine but I'm not asking to start a debate over it in here please.
I live in Europe so all of my cats have been allowed to go outside during the daytime if they wanted to and they always come back indoors to use the litter tray. I provide them with a litter tray for the following reasons;
1) To monitor potential health problems
2) Avoid potential arguments with neigbours,who understandably don't want cats using their garden as a toilet.
3) They need an indoor toilet because I keep them indoors once it gets dark outside, or if the weather isn't very nice outside they might not want to go out at all.
I feed my cats at least 4-6 small meals a day to help ensure that they stay close to home and most of their time outside is spent sleeping or playing in my garden. As far as I'm aware they don't get fed elsewhere, but if I noticed a sudden lack of appetite or changes in weight (for no apparent reason) then I'd take them to the vet to rule out health problems before asking neighbours if they'd been feeding my cats.
I would say that on an average day, my cats probably only choose to spend a couple of hours outside and the rest of the time they are indoors sleeping on the sofa or beds.
